EQUITY VS EQUALITY

Equality and equity are two important concepts that are closely related to inclusion, but they have distinct meanings.

Equality is the idea that everyone should be treated the same and have the same opportunities regardless of their background or circumstances. It is based on the principle of fairness and justice. For example, if everyone is given the same resources, such as a textbook, then they should all have an equal opportunity to succeed in their studies.

Equity, on the other hand, is the idea that people should be treated differently to achieve fairness and justice. It acknowledges that different people have different needs and experiences, and that equal treatment may not be enough to achieve true fairness. For example, if one student has a learning disability, they may need extra support, such as a specialized textbook or a tutor, to have the same opportunity to succeed in their studies as a student without a learning disability.

In summary, Equality is treating everyone the same, while equity is treating everyone fairly by adjusting for individual differences.
